Elegy, inspiring loss with Rodin Pianotrio

The death of a beloved person marks a tragic moment in everyone’s life and, in the case of an artist, this might be reflected in his works. The two piano trios presented in this program are a clear example of painful feelings.

  In the piano trio by Arensky, the cello plays a major role, because the work is dedicated to his dead friend, the virtuoso cellist and composer Karl Davidoff. The first movement is already creating a purely tragic atmosphere, reaching the climax in the Elegy (third movement), showing the lament and nostalgia that can be felt about such loss.

After the death of his four years old daughter, shortly after the premature death of another daughter, Smetana wrote this trio in G minor in 1855. The piece begins with the main theme played by the violin.  The initial tragic melody shows the dominant character of the piece. This dramatic nature is kept throughout the whole trio, reaching its highest expression in the last movement, with the final funeral march.

Trio Rodin was founded in 2009 in Utrecht (The Netherlands) with the aim of focusing their professional careers in the chamber music piano trio repertoire. They followed courses and several  masterclasses held by important musicians such as Kees Hulsmann, Timora Rosler, Paolo Giacometti, Martyn v. d. Hoek, Chris Duindam, Klara Wurtz ,…

They are focused on presenting great works of the chamber music literature in a diverse range of performing venues and program styles from classical to contemporary music.

Trio Rodin has performed in several Music Halls all over Spain and The Netherlands.

Evening with historical instruments and Gesto Antico String trio

Gesto Antico is a diverse historically informed ensemble that plays music from the baroque era to the early romantic period. The ensemble is based around three players,Femke Huizinga from The Netherlands, Judith Verona from Spain, and Anita Gluyas from Australia. The ensemble has been performing together in The Netherlands for the last three years. Recent performances include the Koninklijk Paleis het Loo in Apeldoorn, the annual ‘Concerten in Het Witte Kerkje te Maassluis, and appearing as part of the fringe of the Oude Muziek Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands 2011. Future performances include concert series throughout Europe in countries such as Spain, France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

The individual members are very active as freelance musicians performing throughout Europe with ensembles such as Concerto d’Amsterdam, Concerto Barrocco, European Union Baroque Orchestra, The Bach Orchestra of The Netherlands, The Nieuwe Philarmonie Utrecht, and Forma Antiqva. The group members are also founding members and section leaders of the Arcade Ensemble, a baroque orchestra in The Netherlands.
             The ensemble prides itself on its vibrant, sincere and energetic playing, and endeavours to explore the connection between the audience and performer that is unique to a live performance and the power of this moment.
